What is an SKU?

An SKU (stock keeping unit) is your own internal code for each unique product variant. A black medium T-shirt and a white large T-shirt need different SKUs so you can track inventory, sales and returns accurately across Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Shopify and WooCommerce.

How to create a good SKU format

  • Start with a brand or store prefix (NAV, SL) so codes are unique across channels.
  • Add category and product codes – short, readable abbreviations like TSH for T-shirt.
  • End with variant attributes such as colour and size, then a running number.
  • Avoid spaces and confusing characters like O/0 and I/1, and keep it under 20 characters.
  • Never reuse an SKU for a different product.

Example: NAV-TSH-CTC-BLK-M-001. Turn SKUs into scannable labels with the barcode generator.

SKU vs UPC/EAN vs ASIN

An SKU is created by you and is unique to your business. UPC/EAN are global barcodes licensed from GS1 that identify the same product across all retailers. ASIN (Amazon) and FSN (Flipkart) are catalogue IDs assigned by the marketplace. You need your own SKU in every case.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate an SKU number?

Combine a brand prefix, category code, product code and variant attributes (colour, size), plus an optional running number. The SKU generator builds every combination automatically.

How many characters should an SKU have?

Keep SKUs between 8 and 20 characters – long enough to be unique and meaningful, short enough to read and type.

Can SKUs contain letters and numbers?

Yes. Use uppercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Avoid spaces and special characters, which some marketplaces reject.

Is SKU the same as barcode?

No. An SKU is your internal code; a barcode is a machine-readable image of a code. You can print your SKU as a Code 128 barcode.

Can I import the CSV into Shopify or Amazon?

Yes. Download the CSV and copy the SKU column into your product import template or inventory file.
