How to calculate a discount
Discount % = (MRP − Sale price) ÷ MRP × 100
Example: 40% off ₹2,499 = ₹2,499 × 0.60 = ₹1,499.40, saving ₹999.60.
Extra discounts are not added together
“40% + 10% extra off” is not 50% off. The extra 10% applies to the already discounted price: ₹1,000 → ₹600 → ₹540, an effective discount of 46%. This calculator shows the true effective discount so shoppers know the real deal and sellers do not over-discount by mistake.
For sellers: check the discount still leaves profit
Before you run a sale, make sure the discounted price is above your break-even price. Plug the final price into the profit margin calculator or the marketplace fee calculator to confirm you still make money after fees.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.80. For ₹1,500: ₹1,500 × 0.80 = ₹1,200, so you save ₹300.
How do I find the discount percentage?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. (₹2,000 − ₹1,500) ÷ ₹2,000 × 100 = 25%.
Is 50% + 20% off equal to 70% off?
No. It equals 60% off: the 20% applies to the already-halved price (100 → 50 → 40).
What is the difference between flat discount and percentage discount?
A flat discount removes a fixed rupee amount (₹500 off); a percentage discount removes a share of the price (20% off). Use the mode buttons to compare both.
